Award-winning filmmaker Aviva Kempner has been making independent films since 1979<\/p>\n

\nA child of Holocaust survivor Helen Ciesla and Harold Kempner, a US Army officer, Kempner was born in Berlin, Germany after World War II. Her family history inspired her to produce her first documentary,\u00a0Partisans of Vilna<\/em>\u00a0(1986), focusing on a gripping story of Jewish resistance to the Nazis. Kempner went on to write, direct and produce more films about under-known Jewish heroes. The Peabody award-winning\u00a0The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg<\/em><\/a>(2000)\u00a0brings to light the life and career of the first Jewish baseball star in the Major Leagues. Facing anti-Semitism in the \u201930s and \u201940s, Greenberg welcomed Jackie Robinson in his debut in 1947.\u00a0Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(2009) is an exploration of television pioneer Gertrude Berg, who received the first Best Actress Emmy in history and paved the way for women in media and entertainment.<\/p>\n

In 2015, Kempner released\u00a0Rosenwald<\/em><\/a>, an inspiring historical documentary about businessman and philanthropist Julius Rosenwald, who partnered with Booker T. Washington and African American communities to build over 5,000 schools in the Jim Crow South. Rosenwald also provided grants to support a who\u2019s who of African American artists and intellectuals. A special DVD package<\/p>\n

Kempner is currently working on a new documentary on Morris \u201cMoe\u201d Berg, a Jewish baseball player, who caught and fielded in the Major Leagues from the 1920s through 1939, during baseball\u2019s Golden Age. But very few know that Berg also worked for the US Office of Strategic Services (OSS), spying in Europe and South America. He played a prominent role in US efforts to undermine the German atomic bomb program during WWII. Berg is now remembered most as the catcher who was a spy.<\/p>\n

\nKempner is the founder and executive director of\u00a0The Ciesla Foundation<\/a>, a non-profit organization that produces documentaries that investigate non-stereotypical images of Jews in history and celebrates the untold stories of Jewish heroes. Through insightful and revealing storytelling, interviews with key figures and wide distribution, Kempner\u2019s films assure worthy individuals their rightful places in history.<\/p>\n

Kempner has also collaborated on films, consulting on a documentary about Shimon Peres, the former Israeli President and writing narration for\u00a0Promises to Keep<\/em>\u00a0(1988), the Academy Award-nominated documentary on the homeless. Kempner made a short tragic comedy,\u00a0Today I Vote for my Joey,\u00a0<\/em>about the 2000 election.<\/p>\n

She regularly writes a column for\u00a0THEWRAP<\/a>\u00a0and has written film criticism and articles for numerous publications, including\u00a0The Boston Globe,<\/em>\u00a0Moment,<\/em>\u00a0The Forward,<\/em>\u00a0The Washington Post,<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Washington Jewish Week.<\/em><\/p>\n

A member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Kempner is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, the DC Mayor\u2019s Art Award, WIFV Women of Vision Award and a Media Arts Award from the National Foundation for Jewish Culture. She is the founder of the Washington Jewish Film Festival in Washington, DC, where she resides.<\/p>\n

In addition to making films, Kempner is an activist for DC voting rights and continues to lecture about cinema and write film criticism.<\/p>\n

Alison Richards has worked in documentary film and television production and research for the past 16 years. <\/p>\n

She is currently the Associate Producer for the special DVD package of Aviva Kempner\u2019s historical documentary,\u00a0Rosenwald<\/i>, which includes three hours of extras and an educational packet.<\/p>\n

Richards was associate producer of NOVA\u2019s\u00a0Spies that Fly<\/i>, a\u00a0history of\u00a0unmanned aerial vehicles. Her work in research and production also includes Smithsonian\u2019s\u00a0Stories from the Vaults<\/i>\u00a0with Tom Cavanagh, a\u00a0behind-the-scenes look at the\u00a0Smithsonian Institution, the world\u2019s largest museum complex; the WGBH Emmy Award-winning story,\u00a0Why the Towers Fell<\/i>, about the collapse of the World Trade Center; NOVA\u2019s\u00a0Bioterror: Coping with the New Reality<\/i>; the WGBH Peabody award-winning series\u00a0Building Big with David Macaulay: Bridges,\u00a0Domes, Skyscrapers, Dams, Tunnels<\/i>; and the independent film,\u00a0Tale of the Tongs<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Richards received a Master\u2019s in Documentary Film from American University and a certificate in CopyrightX from Harvard\u2019s Berkman Center for Internet and Society. She serves on the St. Albans Development Committee and Harvard College Leadership Committee. In addition to documentary film work, Richards was a Peace Corps Volunteer, grew up in Southern California and has a BA degree in English from the University of California at Irvine. \u00a0She and her husband Ron Dreben have lived in Washington DC for the past 25 years and have a son James.<\/p>\n
